Wait Until The Weather Clears If you don’t feel comfortable behind the wheel during rain showers, postpone your travels and wait until the weather clears before heading out. There is no reason to put yourself in dangerous situations if not necessary. Double Check Your Vehicle It’s important to check your vehicle’s health year-round, but when it comes to April showers, we want to be looking for specific things. For example, we need to check our head and tail lights, windshield wipers, and our tires to ensure they’re not balding. Bald tires can reduce traction on wet roadways. Slow It Down As you should always adhere to the posted speed limit, when the roadway is wet, this is crucial. We encourage you to drive considerably slower since wet roads are dangerous and your vehicle reacts slower when it rains. Maintain A Safe Distance Between Cars As we said above, your vehicle reacts slower when it rains so it’s important to give yourself a little extra space between vehicles. You should leave several car lengths between you and the vehicle you are following. Avoid Standing Water Driving your vehicle through standstill water can cause hydroplaning and other dangerous situations for your vehicle. Wash Your Ride As temperatures are warming up, it’s important to visit the car wash and treat your vehicle to a little TLC. Make sure to wash the undercarriage of your vehicle to get rid of any winter buildup and debris. It’s also a great idea to have the interior of your vehicle detailed to ensure a fresh, clean start to spring. Check Your Battery Wintertime is known for making batteries weak and it’s important to have your battery tested to ensure its health. Also, if your battery is older than four years old, it’s a good rule of thumb to invest in a new one. Fill Up The Fluids During the winter, your vehicle’s fluids tend to drain easily and quickly. And with spring around the corner, you should be stopping in to have your fluids topped off and be sure you have plenty of windshield washer fluid too. Inspect & Align Your Tires Winter driving can be brutal on your tires and it’s important to ensure that there are no leaks, bulges, and lack of tread on your tires. Stop in and allow our team to inspect your tires, fill up to proper PSI levels, rotate and align them. Get Under The Hood While we’re at it, pop open the hood (when cold) and give everything underneath a good look over. Inspect hoses, belts, caps, air filters, and make sure they are not cracked or damaged. If they are, be sure to schedule an appointment and have them replaced as soon as possible. Drive Smooth Be deliberate, gentle, and gradual. It’s important to drive smoothly and make no jerky movements that can cause an accident slip on the road. A good life hack is to pretend you’re driving with a hot cup of coffee in your lap and you don’t want to spill it. Look Ahead & Look Here When roads get more slippery, you should be looking farther down the road and anticipate what to do next. If there are turns, slow way down. When roads are wet, allow double the stopping distance and triple with snow, and even more with ice. Use extra caution and concentration. If you feel your vehicle beginning to slide, always look where you want your vehicle to go, not where it’s heading at the current moment. Deal With Skids When skids happen, it’s important not to panic, stay calm, and don’t stab on the brakes. For a front-wheel skid, ease off the gas, in a moment or two, the wheels should regain traction. Then aim where you want to go as your traction returns. For rear skids, quickly turn the steering wheel in the same direction the rear is sliding. Ease off the gas and brakes. Steer back in the original direction when you regain traction. Constantly Assess Traction During a snowy/ icy drive, it’s important to continuously assess your traction situation. If your vehicle is equipped with ABS systems, traction-control systems or stability-control systems, your vehicle is more likely to have a successful trip. But don’t rely strictly on these systems. Avoid Frozen Wiper Blades: Whether it’s a little snow or ice, no one likes frozen over wiper blades. Regular service is a must: You should always be regularly servicing your vehicle but when it comes to trading in your old ride, this is especially important. I know there’s been a time or two where you are driving down the road and your gas light comes on. You choose to ignore it and for a little while, that’s alright. But you’re causing serious harm to your vehicle. You’re probably thinking, “no I’m not.” But in reality, you actually are and this week we are going to outline the damage that you are actually causing to your vehicle and why it is so important to fill up your tank before that little light shows up. Take a look at our guide below and stop in to have your fuel pump checked or if you’re ready to upgrade your ride altogether. You’re Wearing Out The Pump: The gas you pump into your vehicle acts as a coolant for the electric fuel-pump motor and when you run low on fuel, this allows your fuel-pump to suck in air. What’s that mean? That means your fuel pump is running hot and can cause your fuel pump to wear out prematurely or eventually fail. This problem will happen over time but can be costly to repair or replace. Fuel Gauges Aren’t Always Accurate: Just because your fuel gauge says you have 30 miles to empty, don’t take the chance. Fuel gauges are known to not be 100% accurate and the precision of your gauge relies on various factors including your vehicle’s fuel economy and your driving style. Consider this as an estimate and not an exact mileage to empty. In short, running on empty puts you at risk of getting stranded or being in an accident when your vehicle suddenly stops in the roadway. So, just fill up. Ok? Sediment Implications Are Brutal: When you fill up the tank, sediments in the gasoline tend to settle toward the bottom of the tank. If you let your fuel levels run low, dirt and other sediments get stirred up from the bottom of the tank. Then, as your fuel pump is trying to pump gas into your engine, it’s sucking up the dirtiest gasoline in the tank filled with all those sediments. This mixture of dirty gasoline can end up in the engine or fuel line and will be a costly repair. Check any and all fluids that are in your vehicle. If they seem low, fill them up. If they look dirty, change them out. Engine oil, power steering, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid - check them all! Have your battery checked by a professional to ensure that it is still in proper working condition. You should check your brake system at the end of each season to be sure they are working properly. In addition, have your rotors, brake linings, and drums inspected at every oil change. Take a look at your hoses and belts - check for cracking, brittle, loose, or signs of excessive wear. How are your tires looking? Make sure they are at proper PSI levels and make sure your tread isn’t unevenly worn. Inspect your exhaust system, you’re looking for any leakage or damage. A key indication of this is unusual noise. Give your HVAC system a go. If your noticing issues or unbearable smells, stop in to see our team and we’ll be more than happy to take a look for you. Got lighting? Take a few minutes to check all of your lightings in your vehicle. Headlights. Brake lights. Interior lighting. It’s important to be able to see and be seen - make sure these are in proper working condition at all times. Windshield wipers are a must. If you haven’t replaced your wipers in the last six months, it’s time to swap them out for a fresh new pair. Most gas stations have garbage cans just inches from the pump. So, next time you fill up - dump the trash or recycle anything you’re hoarding in your vehicle. Now that it’s clean - keep it that way. The most important trick to keep your vehicle organized is keeping it clean in the first place. So, how do you do that? Create a plan that works for you and stick to it. Whether that is cleaning out your vehicle each time you fill up the pump or each time you arrive home from the grocery store. Make a plan and execute it - don’t fall back. Choose organizational tools that will help you succeed! Whether you choose a shower caddy to keep your fluids and oils from tipping over in your trunk or an accordion folder to keep your paperwork organized - find tools that you like and get your items organized. I personally choose these two life hacks, plus I like to use a back seat media organizer to hang on the back of my front seats. The most important trick is to find what works for you and give all your items a home to live. Also, get in the habit of taking at least one thing with you when you exit your vehicle.
