The Toyota Research Institute (TRI) has made the announcement that it’s adding a technical leadership team, to help push research in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence. The team was introduced during a press conference at the 2016 International Consumer Electronics Show, by CEO Gill Pratt. Adding to the team, TRI will also receive guidance from by an Advisory Board comprised of corporate, scientific, and public policy leaders from all across the globe. The TRI, announced in November 2015, has been established to close the gap between product development and fundamental research development. Backed by a $1 billion investment the TRI aims to do things such as develop cars that are unable of crashing, create a system of self-driving vehicles for those who can’t drive, translate outdoor mobility into indoor mobility, and many more using developed methods from artificial intelligence and machine learning. “While the most important technology for enhancing human mobility has traditionally been hardware, today software and data are increasingly essential,” said Gill Pratt, Toyota Executive Technical Advisor and CEO of TRI. “Our leadership team brings decades of experience in pushing the boundaries of human knowledge in computer science and robotics, but we are only getting started. The scale of Toyota’s commitment reflects our belief in the importance of developing safe and reliable automated mobility systems. Toyota is making big moves to advance its vehicle technology and connectivity into the future as the brand just announced that they’ll be working together with Ford on Livio’s SmartDeviceLink (SDL). On top of that, Toyota will incorporate, Data Communication Module (DCM) to its Toyota and Lexus cars during 2017. Currently, most app support systems in vehicles are specific to the automaker. This means that from a Toyota to a BMW you can’t transfer any apps or settings. However, the SDL hopes to change that by creating an open-source smartphone platform that can be used across all automakers in the industry. This would make things easier for both drivers and app developers since it means that only one app needs to be made for all available vehicles. Additionally, Toyota also hopes to add even more DCMs into the future. By 2019, it plans to have a global standard DCM throughout the world, which would help in sending distress signals, as well as sending a massive amount of information to the Toyota Big Data Center (TBDC). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has presented its highest rating of Top Safety Pick + to four Toyota models for the 2016 year. These four awarded models are the Prius v, Camry, Avalon, and the RAV4. Each vehicle received a “good” rating in each of the IIHS crash tests and an “advanced” or “superior” rating on its available front crash prevention system in order to earn this prestigious safety rating. “At Toyota, we continue to focus on the safety and peace of mind of our customers,” said Dino Triantafyllos, Toyota’s North American Chief Quality Officer. “We are proud that IIHS has recognized our commitment to helping protect drivers and passengers.” Overall, Toyota is leading the auto industry in terms of Top Safety Pick + rated vehicles with a total of eight Pick + ratings when you combine Toyota, Lexus, and Scion. For the past three years, Toyota Technical Center (TTC) employee Jennifer Pelky has been working to promote proper car seat safety through her position as a certified child passenger safety technician. Through this position, she has made it her mission to inform new parents about the importance of choosing the right car seat and how to properly instal the seat in their vehicle. As such, she provides demonstrations at local retailers, community events, and fire stations. Beginning in 2014, Jennifer also became a spokesperson for Toyota’s Buckle Up For Life. “As a parent I value the safety of my children above everything else and I see a lot of parents who don’t know they’re doing it wrong, but they’re making an effort and that is great,” says Pelky. “And I know that when they leave, they’re safer than when they came in. That, to me, is huge.” Jennifer first became inspired to pursue this line of engineering back in 2011 when she experienced her own car seat struggles. At the time, she was pregnant with her first child and had just purchased a new car seat from Babies “R” Us. With a degree in engineering from the University of Michigan, and several years of experience in the automotive industry, she figured that installing the seat would be no problem. The task proved to be much more difficult, however, and it took several failed attempts and the help of a co-worker to get it installed properly. Afterwards, she realized that if it was this difficult for her then it must be much worse for the average parent. Car seat safety is an especially important issue in today’s society as an improperly installed car seat can be detrimental to any child that is involved in a vehicle accident. The U.S. Department of Transportation reported that in 2012 there were 1,168 children under the age of 14 killed in traffic accidents and other 169,000 were injured.
