Toyota Motor Corporation knows that the most precious cargo in your Toyota vehicle are your tiny passengers. That’s why they’re constantly working to develop new ways to keep them safe. This week, Toyota unveiled its fourth and newest version of the Total Human Model for Safety (THUMS), a virtual crash dummy software. This version will introduce new passengers, including a three-year-old (3’1” tall), a six-year old (3’10” tall), and a ten-year-old (4’6” tall). This introduction of children follow the collaborative research project between the University of Michigan, Wayne State University, and Toyota’s Collaborative Safety Research Center*. This software is able to simulate vehicle crash injuries on humans. Because it’s able to predict injuries and their extent on humans (and now, children), Toyota will be able to better protect all passengers with devices and safety features such as airbags. *The Collaborative Safety Research Center was established in 2011. It aims to reduce the number of traffic fatalities and injuries through collaborative research with North American universities, hospitals and research agencies, and by sharing the results of this research with society. Welcome to Hotel Tacoma, Toyota’s latest retreat at the top of Hualapai Mountain Park in the Arizona Desert. Former motocross rider, Andy Bell and his friends, Drew Bezanson, Roland Sands, and Louie Vito take on the terrain with motorized bikes, trucks, and side-by-sides for a week of nonstop adventure and fun. Toyota Motor Corporation is continuing their dedication to the 2050 Toyota Environmental Challenge, a set of goals they’ve created to positively affect the environment. They’ve vowed to reduce not only CO₂ emissions produced by their vehicles but by their manufacturing plants and production facilities. This effort can be seen through Toyota’s new solar power system that will be part of their new North American headquarters in Plano, Texas. The move is expected to happen next year, while the system will be completed in two phases. In total, the system will equal 7.75 megawatts and will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 7122 metric tons, which is the equivalent of about 1,000 homes’ electricity usage. “We are dedicated to making sure our new headquarters campus supports – even redefines – Toyota’s commitment to the environment,” said Kevin Butt, Regional Director, North American Environmental Division. “The Plano solar system will not only reduce our environmental footprint and educate team members about renewable energy, it moves us closer to Toyota’s 2050 global environmental challenge to eliminate carbon emissions in all operations.” "Toyota Is Ready to Catch Some Rays in Plano | Corporate." In the July issue of Parents Magazine, Emunds.com named the Toyota Sienna one of the top ten best family cars of the year as well as deeming it the winner of the Best Minivan. Vehicles were rated based on safety, quality of ride, fuel efficiency, comfort, and capacity, price and value, kid-friendly features, interior and exterior workmanship, reliability, visibility, ergonomics, controls and instrumentation, appearance, and special design features. “The endlessly roomy Sienna stands above its competitors for two reasons: It’s the only one with available all-wheel drive, and the especially user-friendly controls help you stay focused on the road,” Parents Magazine writes. June is finally here, which means summer vacation is quickly approaching. If you have children, you're probably preparing for some weekend road trips with your kids. Packing for a car trip can be stressful as it is, trying remember all of the items and supplies that will keep your kids comfortable and entertained for long hours in the car. Many parents are so distracted by that, safety often takes a backseat. The CDC reports that motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death among young children. In order to combat this, Buckle Up For Life has released a list of helpful Summer Safety Tips. Gloria DelCastillo, child passenger safety expert at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and senior specialist for Buckle Up for Life, explains, “We hope everyone takes the time to put these car seat tips in action to help our littlest passengers stay safe this summer and beyond.” Summer Safety Tips: 1) Inch and Pinch Tests: To make sure your child is properly strapped in, use the “pinch” and “inch” tests. First, pinch the car seat strap near their shoulder. If the strap folds when you pinch it, it’s too loose and needs to be tightened. Next, grab your child’s car seat from underneath and move it from side-to-side and front-to-back to see if it moves more than an inch. If it does, it needs to be tightened. 2) No Extra Layers: Do not add materials like towels to attempt to make the car seat area cooler or more comfortable, as they could possibly interfere with restraining in the event of an accident. Only use materials provided or approved by the car seat manufacturer. 3) Cool Off Before Buckling Up: Remember that car seats can get very hot in the summer, so allow some time to let the vehicle cool off before strapping your kids into the seat by leaving the air conditioning on or windows open. And of course, never leave your child alone in a hot car even for a few minutes. 4) No Rentals: Always bring your own car seat, even for a rental car. Renting a car seat means you are unfamiliar with the instructions and safety guidelines. Additionally, you can never be sure what condition the seat is in or if it has been damaged by previous users. 5) Secure Loose Items: With all of the items you have to remember to pack for your trip, you may be tempted to just throw a last minute item in the car before you hit the road. To continue their commitment to finding ways to make mobility safer, more efficient, and convenient, Toyota has announced a collaboration with Uber. Uber is a technology platform that has emerged over the past few years and drastically changed transportation in larger cities. Together, the two companies will enter into a memorandum of understanding where they will experiment with trials of ridesharing in major cities around the world where this transportation trend seems to be expanding. What can we expect from the Toyota-Uber partnership? The two mobility powerhouses have alluded to developing an in-car Uber app for drivers and a possible special fleet program for Toyota and Lexus. Those ideas are far in the future, but for now, Uber drivers can look forward to purchasing a Toyota and using their earnings as Uber drivers to cover their payments. For several years, producing environmentally conscious vehicles has been a top priority for Toyota Motor Corporation. Under the notion that eco-friendly cars need to be widely accepted before making a measurable impact, Toyota has been strongly encouraging and promoting a global mass-market adoption of hybrid vehicles. Today is an illustration of this effort, as Toyota Motor Corporation proudly announced they have reached a total of 9.014 million units in global sales for their hybrid vehicles. Back in 1997, Toyota launched the Coaster Hybrid EV and the Toyota Prius, known as the world’s first mass-produced vehicle. Since then, they have expanded their hybrid lineup to include the Corolla, RAV4, and Sienna. It is estimated they’ve decreased CO2 emissions by 67 million tons* and saved 25 million kiloliters of gasoline (that’s 6 billion gallons!). According to their Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, which they announced last year, Toyota is hoping to reach 15 million total units by 2020. Take a look at some of our favorite quotes below. On Success: “The other thing that I understood was I had always put my future in the hands of my manager, and I realized that was a huge mistake. Only one person is responsible for your career and that’s you.” On Being a Boss: “Back in the day, if you were very dictatorial in your management style, you got exactly what someone asked you to do. Today if people really understand why they’re doing something, I think they give more.” On What Keeps Him Up At Night: “ Today it’s the price of oil, for a lot of different reasons. Obviously it’s difficult for us to forecast demand – on trucks and SUVs especially – not knowing exactly where it’s going to fall out. But probably the more difficult part about that is it may mask trends in the marketplace that we can’t see because of it.” On Work/Life Balance: “My life can sometimes be 48/7. This week is an example. Tuesday I had an officer’s meeting in Japan. But I had to be in Des Moines, Iowa, Tuesday night for a reception and a dinner. So I spend the day in Japan, fly all night, get there the same day that I left, do my reception dinner, speak to 800 attendees the next morning at a fundraiser for the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of Iowa, fly back home, have three conference calls until 1 a.m. with Japan.” On Travel: “I love traveling. I like seeing new places and meeting new people. But last year I was gone 180 nights . . .
