Toyota is combining its relationships with Amy Purdy and Daytona International Speedway by making Purdy the official Toyota Camry pace car driver for the 2015 Daytona 500, which airs this Sunday. This will now be the second year that the Toyota Camry has served as the pace car for the “The Great American Race”. Toyota has a long term partnership with the Daytona International Speedway that was formed when the two signed an 11 year contract making Toyota the Speedway’s first founding partner for the development of their “Daytona Rising” project.

Additionally, Purdy has been a spokesperson for Toyota for some time now and most recently starred in “How Great I am”, one of the brand’s two Super Bowl Commercials. Purdy is all about living life without limits, a motto that she has developed following the amputations of both legs below the knee due to a meningitis infection when she was only 19.  Purdy has gone on to be a Paralympic medalist in Snowboarding and was the first runner up on a recent season of Dancing with The Stars, where she captures worldwide attention for being the first double amputee competitor.

“Another exciting moment in my relationship with Toyota,” said Purdy. “As a race fan, I’m thrilled to be invited to be the Honorary Pace Car driver at the biggest race of the NASCAR season – the Daytona 500. This is another opportunity to try something new and be bold in my own life. I can’t wait to visit my fellow Toyota athletes and step into their world by getting behind the wheel of the Camry pace car.”

This Sunday during the Big Game, Toyota will be airing two advertisements that highlight the all-new 2015 Camry. Both commercials celebrate Toyota’s “One Bold Choice Leads to Another” campaign in a unique way with one celebrating “Bold Dads”, while the other takes a totally different approach.

In this spot titles “How Great I Am” Toyota highlights the impressive accomplishments of paralympic athlete Amy Purdy and her determination to never be held back.  We watch her running, snowboarding, mountain biking and performing an intricate ballroom dancing routine that is a nod to her appearance on Dancing with the Stars.  All the while, the commercial is voiced over by Muhammad Ali delivering his famous “How Great I Am” speech.

“To say I’m honored to be in this spot airing during the game would be an understatement,” said Purdy. “All my life I’ve been faced with choices, and I’ve been determined to be bold through every one of them. I have a great relationship with Toyota, and to be in an ad that encourages others to persevere and be bold in their own lives is something that is hard to accurately put into words.”

For this year’s Super Bowl on February 1, 2015, Toyota will air two commercials featuring the Toyota Camry. The first of the two spots is part of their “One Bold Choice Lead to Another” which is a tribute to dads. This new spot features a series of fathers discussing their relationships with their own fathers and how that has helped to shape their role as a dad to their children. In anticipation of this new Super Bowl spot, the brand has released a new teaser spot featuring professional football players discussing fatherhood. The past and present athletes featured in this spot include Fred Jackson, DeMarcus Ware, LaVar Arrington and Kurt Warner.

“This ‘One Bold Choice’ campaign is all about the bold choices we as parents—fathers—have to make every day for our families. These choices range from teaching our kids, to showing them what a loving relationship looks like, to displaying sacrifice, work ethic, excellence and love in all areas of our lives,” said Kurt Warner. “Just as I try to encourage and inspire my kids to become greater tomorrow than they were today, my hope is that with the work of Toyota and this campaign, many others will be inspired to do the same in their lives.”

In order to help teens and their parents learn the importance of combating distracted driving, Toyota has launched the new TeenDrive365 distracted driving simulator with Oculus Rift. To utilize this system, the user simply needs to be sitting in any parked Toyota vehicle while wearing the special Oculus Rift headset. Additional technologies utilized by this system include RealSpace™ 3D Audio, 3D immersive audio, 100 degree field of view that goes beyond your peripheral vision, 360 degree head tracking that follows every turn of the head in real time and a unique 3D view with high quality depth and scale.

Once on, the headset will create a complete virtual simulation of a busy downtown road for drivers to navigate through. The actual pedals and steering wheel on the vehicle will be used in order to give you a real sense of driving throughout the program. While driving, you will be faced with a number of typical driving distractions including friends in the passenger and back seat, text messages, music and traffic noise. The program helps to monitor your ability to stay focused through the distractions and provides consequences if you don’t.

“Oculus Rift provides a virtual reality driving experience that mirrors real life behind the wheel, giving us a powerful, one-of-a-kind way to show parents and teens how everyday distractions can affect their ability to drive safely,” said Marjorie Schussel, Corporate Marketing Director for Toyota. “This is the most innovative example of how we’re helping teens and parents become safer drivers together through our ongoing Toyota TeenDrive365 initiative.”
