Why You Shouldn’t Drive On Empty | Hollidaysburg, PA

BLOG_HEADER_1

The Fiore Toyota team knows how tempting it can be to drive your gas tank all the way down to empty, especially with the current gas prices, but it can be more detrimental to your vehicle than you think. Repairing your fueling system due to damage caused by driving on low fuel can be incredibly expensive and time-consuming. We’ve compiled a short list of some of the most important reasons why you shouldn’t let your tank get too low. If you read through our list and realize your car’s fueling system may need to be inspected, schedule a service appointment with the certified technicians at Fiore Toyota’s Service Center, and let us keep your car running for years to come.

Why You Shouldn’t Drive On Empty:

Your Fuel Gauge Isn’t Always Accurate

  • Some vehicles with electronic or needle point readouts are not always incredibly accurate. After your hit “Empty” you may have 1 mile left or 20, regardless you shouldn’t leave the length of your trip up to fate.

Your Fuel Pump Uses Gasoline As A Coolant

  • Your pump uses gasoline as a coolant, and when there’s no gas to pull in, it uses air instead. Air creates much more friction, and therefore heat, which creates the perfect recipe for your fuel pump to burn out quickly.

Sediment Collects At The Bottom Of Your Tank

  • Every fuel tank has a certain amount of sediment that collects at the bottom and when you are very low on fuel, your pump will start pulling in sediment-filled gas, sending gunk through your fuel lines and fuel injectors until you’ll need a full fuel system flush to get it running properly again.

Toyota Warning Lights

“What Did Dad Say Again?”: Toyota Warning Lights Made Easy

Let’s face it — the moment a mystery light pops up on your dash, most of us do the same thing: squint, panic slightly, and then try to remember what Dad used to say about “that one with the exclamation mark.” Was it tires? Brakes? The flux capacitor? At Fiore Toyota in Hollidaysburg, PA, we’re here to decode the dashboard for you — no dad required. Below, we’re breaking down some of the most common Toyota warning lights so you can spend less time Googling and more time driving with confidence. Master Warning Light Translation: Something’s up. This triangle-with-an-exclamation-point light is your car’s way of saying, “Hey, I need attention.” It could be a variety of minor or moderate issues — from low washer fluid to more serious alerts. A quick scan of your dashboard messages or your Toyota app will usually reveal the culprit. Low Fuel Light Translation: You gambled. You lost. We all think we can push it. But when this light comes on, it’s best to find a gas station — stat. Especially on those winding roads around Blair County, where “next gas: 40 miles” isn’t unheard of. Charging System Warning Light Translation: Your battery might be calling it quits. If you see this little battery symbol light up, don’t ignore it. It could mean your alternator or charging system is malfunctioning. If your radio’s fading and the lights are dimming, swing by Fiore Toyota’s service center before you end up stranded at Sheetz. Low Oil Pressure Light Translation: Red means stop — seriously. This is not a drill. If your oil light turns on, pull over immediately and shut the engine off. Low oil pressure can do major damage in a short time. Call your trusty mechanic (or, better yet, us) for what to do next. Headlight High-Beam Indicator Translation: Congratulations, you found the brights. No cause for alarm here — this little blue icon just lets you know your high beams are on. Just don’t blind the good people of Duncansville on your way home. Tire Pressure Warning Light Translation: Inflate your life. If your tires are feeling a little low — or your dashboard thinks they are — this light will let you know. It could be as simple as a cold morning or a slow leak. Stop by and we’ll check it out for you. (We even have free air!) VSC OFF & TRAC OFF Lights Translation: Traction control is off. Tread carefully. Whether you turned them off intentionally (say, to get out of a snowbank) or by accident, these systems help keep you stable during slippery driving. You’ll want to turn them back on unless you’re doing donuts in an empty parking lot. (We don’t officially condone that, by the way.) Cruise Control Indicator Translation: You’re cruising now. This one’s just here to tell you that cruise control is on — enjoy the ride, but keep your foot near the brake just in case you need to step in. SRS Airbag Warning Light Translation: Your airbags might not deploy when you need them. If this light’s on, don’t wait. Your Supplemental Restraint System is no joke. Bring your vehicle to Fiore Toyota to get it checked out right away. When in Doubt, Bring It to Fiore Toyota Let’s be real: warning lights don’t always give you the full story. If you ever see something you’re unsure about, don’t play the guessing game — bring it to the experts at Fiore Toyota, 1000 S Logan Boulevard in Hollidaysburg, PA. We’ll scan your system, explain what’s going on, and get you safely back on the road in no time. Need help deciphering your dashboard right now? Schedule service or give us a call. We’ve got your back (and your oil, tires, battery, and brakes).
