And the award for the Mid-size Pickup Truck of Texas goes to the new 2016 Toyota Tacoma! Last week the Texas Auto Writers Association’s (TAWA) had their annual Texas Truck Rodeo event where the truck winners are separated from the losers. The two-day event hosted 69 journalists who helped decide the winners of the various awards from the 88 vehicles in attendance. The Tacoma impressed the judges with its technology, performance, and style by  showing off its new 3.5L V6 powertrain and off-road technology.

“As America’s best-selling mid-size pickup for ten years running, the recognition as Mid-size Pickup Truck of Texas confirms our efforts to produce a great truck that will carry Tacoma’s legacy as the toughest, most durable truck in the segment,” said Mike Sweers, Tacoma chief engineer. “Toyota’s commitment to the new Tacoma was focused on meeting the needs of adventure-seekers on a variety of tamed and untamed surfaces.”

In an effort to help curb unsafe driving habits in young people, Toyota is turning to those they listen to the most, their peers. The Toyota TeenDrive365 Video Challenge and The Toyota Driving Coach are the two latest initiatives headed by the automaker.

“We know that teens rank their own peers as one of the leading influencers on their behavioral choices. With that in mind, Discovery Education is proud to partner with Toyota on this unique initiative that empowers teens to use their digital storytelling skills to inspire their peers,” said Lori McFarling, Senior Vice President at Discovery Education. “To keep teens safe on the road, it’s critical that we reach them in the classroom – where they spend the majority of their time – by providing needed digital resources that emphasize the importance of making smart choices behind the wheel.”

The Toyota TeenDrive365 Video Challenge teams up with Discovery Education and prompts high school students all across the US to create short videos that aim to inspire their friends and family members to practice safe driving habits and to avoid distractions while behind the wheel. There is a $15,000 grand prize and an opportunity to work with a Discovery film crew to recreate their video as a TV-ready PSA. Visit www.TeenDrive365inschool.com for more information.

DoSomething.org will help empower teens with knowledge about distracted driving and will create an opportunity for conversation among teens and parents with the  Toyota Driving Coach program. The campaign will run from October 1-31, 2015, so visit https://www.dosomething.org/campaigns/driving-coach for more information.

In an effort to publicize the effects of the Toyota Production System and the benefits of streamlining and simplifying work processes, Toyota has released three short films collectively known as “The Toyota Effect”. By sharing the Toyota Production System with their partners and community organizations, Toyota hopes to increase efficiency and decrease unnecessary spending, as well as help improve the lives of those around them.

Toyota teamed up with three award-winning directors, Kief Davidson, Steve James, and Ross Kauffman to make the films and then debuted them at the New York Film Festival this week. In the first video, 116 Innovators (directed by Steve James), Toyota team members pay a visit to a Chicago-based partner, ACE Metal Crafts. Ultimately, many small changes were made that made a very large impact on the time it took to carry out tasks, specifically within the shipping department, and the goal of improving efficiency was certainly met.

Watch the video above to see exactly how ACE Metal Crafts benefitted from their unique partnership with Toyota.

Safety, performance, and design awards are not the only accolades that Toyota has to brag about; the company can now add “Corporation of the Year” to the list of awards it has. The U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) is giving the prestigious award to Toyota for its continued demonstration that diversity and inclusion activities are both principled and profitable within the workforce. The automaker was also recognized for continuously strengthening its ties with the community that is responsible for $1.5 trillion in consumer spending and for being the number one selling brand among Hispanics for ten consecutive years.

Javier Palomarez, USHCC President and CEO said: “We are thrilled to honor Toyota as our 2015 Corporation of the Year. As the world’s top automaker, Toyota demonstrates that global industry leaders can empower minorities while building a profitable business model. By constructing their vehicles where they sell them, Toyota supports local suppliers and economies. We look forward to their continued partnership with the Hispanic business community.”

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama is celebrating the production of their 4 millionth engine at the plant located in Huntsville, that employs approximately 1,300 workers and produces V6, V8 and 4-cylinder engines. This is not the first time that the plant has made international news since it is the only plant globally to produce all three types of engines under one roof, making it one of the largest Toyota engine plants in the world.

Also, the Toyota Motor Manufacturing plant in Alabama is one of only two designated “model sustainable plants” in North America, resulting in other Toyota facilities benchmarking for its environmental achievements.

“We look to the Alabama plant as a leader.  Every challenge it has faced, the team there exceeds any-and-all expectations,” said Osamu Ushio, executive vice president of operations and manufacturing, Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc.  “That is why we continue to invest so much into the facility.  They have what it takes to be successful – a strong group of team members who are dedicated to quality and safety.  They should be very proud of the 4-millionth milestone.”

To understand just how monumental reaching the 4 millionth engine is, here are some stats:

  • Place the 4 million engines built over the last 12 years front to back and they would stretch from Huntsville to Las Vegas.
  • Since the start of production in 2003, the Huntsville plant has built 1 million 4-cylinder engines, 1.3 million V6 engines and 1.7 million V8 engines.
  • Spend two shifts in the plant and you’ll see a lot of horsepower – nearly 2,500 engines are built each day with an annual capacity of 710,000 engines.  The horsepower of 4 million engines reaches over 1 billion, which is enough output to launch 29 space shuttles.
  • The engines go into seven Toyota vehicles built in North America: Camry (America’s best-selling car), RAV4, Highlander, Sequoia, Tacoma, Tundra and Venza.
