TeenDrive365 Video Challenge Is Back
With car accidents being the number one killer of teenagers in the United States, Toyota has made it their mission to help teens drive safe. However, they believe the best way to do this is to let teens talk to each other. That’s why Toyota and Discovery Education have been partnering to bring us the TeenDrive365 Video Challenge. Teens who would like to enter are asked to make a short video that encourages safe driving among their peers.
“We’ve held the Toyota TeenDrive365 Video Challenge with Discovery Education for five years now because we know that teens can really get through to other teens about driving safety,” said Mike Goss, General Manager, Social Innovation, Toyota Motor North America. “Every year, teens across the country wow us with a mix of videos that are smart, startling, persuasive and often very funny. We can’t wait to see what this year’s crop of young filmmakers come up with.”
Since the challenge began, Toyota and Discovery Education have awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships and prizes to several teens. This year, the grand prize will be a $15,000 scholarship and the opportunity to reshoot their winning video as a TV-ready PSA with Discovery Films. If your teen is interested, they can register and submit their entries today through February 23, 2017 at www.TeenDrive365inschool.com.

Scion Lives On at Fiore Toyota
As many of our customers already know, the Scion brand is transitioning back to Toyota. For a bit of background, the Scion brand was established back in 2003 as a test lab division for Toyota. They wanted to appeal to a younger audience by offering products that were unique, bold, and reflective of the passion of their drivers. With 13 years and 1 million Scions sold under their belt, let’s look back on the history of Scion in the video above. And for those diehard Scion fans, we still have a few New Scion Vehicles left at Fiore Toyota! Don’t miss out on the chance to own a piece of history!
Buckle Up For Life’s Car Seat Safety Tips
Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, or babysitter, there’s one thing we all agree on: car seats are not exactly simple contraptions. Recently, a study was revealed that 3 out of every four car seats are not installed properly. In honor of Child Passenger Safety Week (September 18-24), Buckle Up For Life, Toyota’s national car seat education program, is sharing five of their top tips for car seat safety.
- Buy New: When you purchase a used vehicle, many times you will get a copy of the vehicle’s history report. With car seats, this is not the case. If the seat has been through a crash, it may be unable to protect your child. Also, general wear and tear can decrease effectiveness. Safety experts agree the best thing to do is to buy a new car seat.
- Measure Twice: Once your child is buckled in, pinch the shoulder strap. If it wrinkles, tighten the strap. Then grab the bottom of the seat and move it from side to side and front to back. If the seat moves any more than an inch either way, it must be tightened.
- Inner Beauty: Don’t be distracted by fancy fabric or other “luxurious” bells and whistles. Safety is most important and considering all car seats must meet the same federal child restraint safety standards, it is silly to spend more money than necessary.
- Give a Boost: We know that children can be adamant that they’re a “big kid” and should be afforded the same privileges, like sitting without a car seat. But, if they’re under 4’9”, a seat belt won’t fit them correctly and will often ride up around their waists or necks, which can be especially dangers in an accident. Use a booster seat until they reach the proper height.
- Consult the Experts: If you’re looking for more tips and advice, there are plenty of excellent resources at BuckleUpForLife.org. Check out things like car seat installation videos and links to car seat inspection stations.

AAA’s Back-To-School Safety List: Part Two
Fiore Toyota wants to help our customers head back-to-school not only in style, but in safety! That’s why we’re sharing the AAA “School’s Open – Driving Carefully” Safety Tip List. Last week, we talked about the importance of slowing down, stopping, and paying attention. If you missed the blog, catch up right here then check out the next three tips below.
4.) Reverse Responsibly – Whether you have a Reverse Backup Camera in your vehicle or not, it’s always important to exhibit extra caution while reversing. No technology can fully replace driver awareness or account for all blind spots. Before you back up, check out your surroundings. Are there kids in or near the driveways or on the sidewalks? Once you’ve determined it’s safe to proceed, take your time and reverse slowly.
5.) Watch for Bicycles – It takes quite a bit of time to be fully confident on a bicycle, so many children are often wobbly and unstable on theirs. That’s why it’s so important to be extra cautious when approaching a kid on a bike. Make sure you give them about three feet of passing distance between your vehicle and their bike. And if your kid is riding his or her bike, make sure they have a properly-fitted helmet and are well-versed in biking safety.
6.) Talk to Your Teen – Pedestrians aren’t the only students at risk for accidents during back-to-school season. In the United States, car crashes take more teenage lives than any other cause. That’s why parents must be extra vigilant in discussing safe driving practices with their teens. If you’re looking for a good place to start, head over to AAA’s Teen Driving Page.

AAA’s Back-To-School Safety List: Part One
In 1946, AAA created the “School’s Open – Drive Carefully” campaign to promote driver awareness and child safety during back-to-school season. 70 years later, it is more important than ever, with 55 million children heading back to school this fall, and 13% of those children walking and riding their bikes to school. Over the past ten years, one in four child pedestrian fatalities have occurred during the hours of 3 PM and 7 PM, which are prime after-school hours. This year, AAA has released a list of six safety tips help you drive safer and protect school kids on and off the road. The first three tips are available below!
1.) Slow Down – If you are driving through a school zone, expect to hit the brakes and slow down at least 10 MPH. While it may seem unnecessary, the fact is that you are two-thirds more likely to severely injure and even kill a pedestrian that you hit if you are driving at 35 MPH as opposed to 25 MPH. Obey the school zone speed limit during the requested hours.
2.) Stop Completely – Many people see nothing wrong with performing a “rolling stop” and not stopping completely at the red octagon. It may seem harmless, especially if you’re in a hurry and there’s no one around, but performing this act in a neighborhood or school zone is extremely hazardous. Always come to a complete stop and check your surrounds for children on sidewalks or in crosswalks before you take off again.
3.) Eliminate Distractions – Every driver is guilty of distracted driving at one point or another, but during back-to-school season it’s especially important to cut down on distractions such as eating or cell-phone use while driving. Even if your eyes leave the road for two seconds, you can more than double your chance of crashing. And with children’s’ unpredictable behavior, they could easily fall victim to this.
Our blog next week will feature that final three AAA recommendations which include reversing, bicycles, and teenagers!
