Toyota Motor Company was one of more than 20 automakers who agreed to help the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in their goal to make Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) standard by no later than September 1, 2022. Now, Toyota has announced that they plan to make this technology standard on their vehicles even sooner by setting a new goal for the end of next year. Therefore, the brand hopes to make AEB standard on all new vehicle beginning with models for the 2018 model year. As of now, the only vehicles in the Toyota lineup that will not have standard AEB by then will be the 4Runner and the Mirai.
“We are proud to help lead this industry in standardizing these systems and bring automated braking to our customers sooner rather than later,” said Jim Lentz, CEO of Toyota Motor North America.
