AAA’s Back-To-School Safety List: Part Two
Fiore Toyota wants to help our customers head back-to-school not only in style, but in safety! That’s why we’re sharing the AAA “School’s Open – Driving Carefully” Safety Tip List. Last week, we talked about the importance of slowing down, stopping, and paying attention. If you missed the blog, catch up right here then check out the next three tips below.
4.) Reverse Responsibly – Whether you have a Reverse Backup Camera in your vehicle or not, it’s always important to exhibit extra caution while reversing. No technology can fully replace driver awareness or account for all blind spots. Before you back up, check out your surroundings. Are there kids in or near the driveways or on the sidewalks? Once you’ve determined it’s safe to proceed, take your time and reverse slowly.
5.) Watch for Bicycles – It takes quite a bit of time to be fully confident on a bicycle, so many children are often wobbly and unstable on theirs. That’s why it’s so important to be extra cautious when approaching a kid on a bike. Make sure you give them about three feet of passing distance between your vehicle and their bike. And if your kid is riding his or her bike, make sure they have a properly-fitted helmet and are well-versed in biking safety.
6.) Talk to Your Teen – Pedestrians aren’t the only students at risk for accidents during back-to-school season. In the United States, car crashes take more teenage lives than any other cause. That’s why parents must be extra vigilant in discussing safe driving practices with their teens. If you’re looking for a good place to start, head over to AAA’s Teen Driving Page.

AAA’s Back-To-School Safety List: Part One
In 1946, AAA created the “School’s Open – Drive Carefully” campaign to promote driver awareness and child safety during back-to-school season. 70 years later, it is more important than ever, with 55 million children heading back to school this fall, and 13% of those children walking and riding their bikes to school. Over the past ten years, one in four child pedestrian fatalities have occurred during the hours of 3 PM and 7 PM, which are prime after-school hours. This year, AAA has released a list of six safety tips help you drive safer and protect school kids on and off the road. The first three tips are available below!
1.) Slow Down – If you are driving through a school zone, expect to hit the brakes and slow down at least 10 MPH. While it may seem unnecessary, the fact is that you are two-thirds more likely to severely injure and even kill a pedestrian that you hit if you are driving at 35 MPH as opposed to 25 MPH. Obey the school zone speed limit during the requested hours.
2.) Stop Completely – Many people see nothing wrong with performing a “rolling stop” and not stopping completely at the red octagon. It may seem harmless, especially if you’re in a hurry and there’s no one around, but performing this act in a neighborhood or school zone is extremely hazardous. Always come to a complete stop and check your surrounds for children on sidewalks or in crosswalks before you take off again.
3.) Eliminate Distractions – Every driver is guilty of distracted driving at one point or another, but during back-to-school season it’s especially important to cut down on distractions such as eating or cell-phone use while driving. Even if your eyes leave the road for two seconds, you can more than double your chance of crashing. And with children’s’ unpredictable behavior, they could easily fall victim to this.
Our blog next week will feature that final three AAA recommendations which include reversing, bicycles, and teenagers!

Toyota Joins Hands with United Way
As we mentioned in last week’s blog, in celebration of the Olympics, Toyota has asked the world to join together to support United Way. The global non-profit organization works to make positive changes in communities by educating and offering opportunities to the less fortunate. With a focus on health, education, and income, United Way has more than 2.6 volunteers and 9.6 million donors across the globe.
In order to raise money for such an incredible community-based organization, Toyota has created a new social campaign called #LetsJoinHands. Stand Together with Toyota
The Olympics are in full swing, and to celebrate, Toyota released a new national campaign that encourages friendship, teamwork, and coming together. Toyota’s founder believed that gathering together generated great power. In their new ad, titled, “Stand Together,” the brand shows how just a simple gesture – holding hands – can be used to unite the world.
“Teamwork is ingrained in Toyota’s DNA – it’s a founding principle,” said Jack Hollis, group vice president of marketing, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. “We believe, as our founder did, in the ‘power of togetherness’ and athletics is an amazing example of the power of teamwork. While we do not compete at the highest levels of sport on the playing field, we celebrate the spirit of collaboration every day, whether it is within the walls of Toyota, or in our interaction with our guests.”
Toyota also wants to give their fans and opportunity to get involved. The brand has created a hashtag #LetsJoinHands, and for every person who creates and share a video of people joining hands, Toyota will donate $20 dollars to United Way. You’ll also have a chance to see your video on Toyota’s social media and pre-roll. Watch the video above and click the link below for more details!
