The Fiore Toyota team knows how tempting it can be to drive your gas tank all the way down to empty, especially with the current gas prices, but it can be more detrimental to your vehicle than you think. Repairing your fueling system due to damage caused by driving on low fuel can be incredibly expensive and time-consuming. We’ve compiled a short list of some of the most important reasons why you shouldn’t let your tank get too low. If you read through our list and realize your car’s fueling system may need to be inspected, schedule a service appointment with the certified technicians at Fiore Toyota’s Service Center, and let us keep your car running for years to come.

Why You Shouldn’t Drive On Empty:

Your Fuel Gauge Isn’t Always Accurate

  • Some vehicles with electronic or needle point readouts are not always incredibly accurate. After your hit “Empty” you may have 1 mile left or 20, regardless you shouldn’t leave the length of your trip up to fate.

Your Fuel Pump Uses Gasoline As A Coolant

  • Your pump uses gasoline as a coolant, and when there’s no gas to pull in, it uses air instead. Air creates much more friction, and therefore heat, which creates the perfect recipe for your fuel pump to burn out quickly.

Sediment Collects At The Bottom Of Your Tank

  • Every fuel tank has a certain amount of sediment that collects at the bottom and when you are very low on fuel, your pump will start pulling in sediment-filled gas, sending gunk through your fuel lines and fuel injectors until you’ll need a full fuel system flush to get it running properly again.

April showers bring May flowers, but they also make for some muddy situations. Dirt roads and grassy fields can become your Toyota’s worst enemy during the rainy season ahead! But, don’t worry, the Fiore Toyota team has got you covered with our tips on how to get your car out of the mud! So, be prepared this muddy March by reading our list below and don’t forget to bring your car into Fiore Toyota’s Service Center for a service appointment to make sure your car is as rain ready as can be!

Fiore Toyota’s Tips For Getting Your Car Out Of The Mud:

Have Any Passengers Get Out of The Vehicle

  • This’ll hopefully only be a short-lived inconvenience for your passengers and help reduce the weight of your vehicle thereby stopping it from sinking further into the mud.

Dig Out The Area In Front Of Your Tires

  • If reducing the weight doesn’t help get your car moving, it may be time to get your hands dirty. Scoop the mud out from the area directly in front of your tires to make the rut less steep and enable your car to climb out.

Steer Straight And Don’t Spin Your Wheels

  • Turn your steering wheel to make sure that your front wheels are pointing straight and slowly press down on the accelerator. Do not press down hard on the accelerator as rapidly spinning wheels will more than likely make you lose traction and sink deeper into the mud.

Try To Get Traction

  • A floor mat, piece of cardboard, wooden plank, or even your jacket are all items you can try and slip under your tires to help gain traction.

Use A Tow Strap

  • If there is another driver nearby willing to try and tow you out, you can use a tow strap. They should be part of any vehicle emergency kit and are easy to use. Just fix one end of the strap to the towers rear bumper mount or trailer hitch, fix the other end of the strap to your vehicle’s front tow hook, put your can in drive and have the tower accelerate slowly until the strap is gaunt. You and the tower can then apply light pressure to both of your accelerators and hopefully ease your way out of the mud.

When your car battery dies in a parking lot, or a scary indicator lights up on your dash making you pull over, or, worst of all, you’ve been in an accident and your vehicle is undrivable; who ya gonna call? A Tow Truck! But, we know calling for a tow can be scary and stressful. So, to help you feel a bit more prepared, Fiore Toyota came up with a list of what you’ll have to know when having your car towed! Have you recently bought, or are planning to buy a new Toyota with the help of the Fiore Toyota team? Then you may be eligible to sign up for our Toyotacare or Toyotacare Plus. Our plans offer 24 hour roadside assistance, free routine maintenance, as well as a myriad of other services. If you’d like to learn more about either of these plans, feel free to contact us. Not a Toyota driver? Schedule a test-drive today and let us change that for you!

What You Need To Know When Having Your Car Towed:

  1. Get yourself and your vehicle to safety.
  • Hopefully you’ll be in a safe, well-lit parking lot when you need a tow. But, if you happen to need a tow from a more dangerous spot, be sure to do what you can to get your car off the road and put out any indicators you may have (cones, flags, flares) to alert other drivers of the situation.
  1. Gather any documents or other information you might need.
  • To make things go as quickly and smoothly as possible, gather all necessary documents (license, registration, proof of insurance, roadside assistance program membership card, ect.) so you can present them if required.
  1. Make the call.
  • Call the nearest Tow Truck service or contact your automaker, auto insurance, or roadside assistance program if enrolled in any of the above. Be as specific as possible when relaying your car’s location.
  1. Wait in your vehicle if possible.
  • If your vehicle is in a safe position, we suggest you wait for your tow from inside your car. Depending on your location, the weather, or any other number of factors it may be a while until your tow arrives.
  1. Be ready to go for the tow.
  • Hopefully you’ll have gathered all necessary documentation by now and will have it ready to present when the tow truck pulls up. You’ll have to sign some paperwork, but then the tow truck should load your car up and be on its way to a service center!

So, we invite all drivers to take a peek below at our tips and tricks for driving in the snow, everyday driving, and long-distance driving. Tips For Driving In The Snow:

  • Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Applying the gas slowly to accelerate is the best method for gaining traction and avoiding skids.
  • Drive slowly. Everything takes longer on snow-covered roads. Accelerating, stopping, turning – nothing happens as quickly as on dry pavement. Give yourself time to maneuver by driving slowly.
  • The normal dry pavement following distance of three to four seconds should be increased to eight to ten seconds
  • Know your brakes. Whether you have antilock brakes or not, the best way to stop is threshold braking.
  • Don’t stop if you can avoid it.
  • Don’t stop going up a hill. There’s nothing worse than trying to get moving up a hill on an icy road.
  • Make it know what kind of driving assistance you have (AAA, Roadside Assistance, etc.)

Everyday Driving Tips:

  • Avoid driving while you’re fatigued.
  • Never warm up a vehicle in an enclosed area, such as a garage.
  • Make certain your tires are properly inflated.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid gas line freeze-up.
  • If possible, avoid using your parking brake in cold, rainy, and snowy weather.
  • Do not use cruise control when driving on any slippery surface (wet, ice, sand).
  • Always look and steer where you want to go.
  • Use your seat belt every time you get into your vehicle.

Long-Distance Driving Tips:

  • Watch Weather Reports
  • Service your vehicle before hitting the road
  • Keep at least half a tank at all times
  • If you become snow-bound, stay with your vehicle. It provides temporary shelter and makes it easier for rescuers to locate you.
  • Tie a brightly colored cloth to the antenna or place a cloth at the top of a rolled-up window to signal distress, if needed.
  • Make sure the exhaust pipe isn’t clogged with snow, ice, or mud if you slide off the road
